Yoga

Yoga is a mind and body practice with historical origins in ancient Indian philosophy. Like other meditative movement practices used for health purposes, various styles of yoga typically combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditationMany people who practice yoga do so to maintain their health and well-being, improve physical fitness, relieve stress, and enhance quality of life. In addition, yoga is also used to address specific health conditions, such as back pain, neck pain, arthritis, and anxiety.

Recent studies in people with chronic low-back pain suggest that a carefully adapted set of yoga poses can help reduce pain and improve function (the ability to walk and move). One NCCAM-funded study of 90 people with chronic low-back pain found that participants who practiced Iyengar yoga had significantly less disability, pain, and depression after 6 months.  Conclusions from another 2011 study of 313 adults with chronic or recurring low-back pain suggested that practicing yoga for 12 weeks resulted in better function than usual medical care.

Viniyoga master Gary Kraftsow developed protocols for a recent National Institutes of Health-sponsored study of treatment for back pain. This excellent two-DVD series is based on this work and on his 30 years of experience as a yoga therapist.

This DVD is focused on the medical needs of the body for those experiencing acute and chronic back pain. Emily Kligerman gives a thorough explanation for types of back pain, which provides an excellent understanding for all knowledge levels. Helpful illustrations are provided. Also two ''teachers'' are shown side-by-side, which allows viewers to easily modify each pose. This is a very well organized and descriptive DVD from Real Bodywork.
